jSon is the founder of the SURFACE | studio, a design studio based in Zhuhai, China. Along with designing, he is a studio master working within the Department of Architecture at Zhuhai College of Science and Technology. The SURFACE | studio operates concurrently as a design practice, research vessel, and teaching forum. The synthesis of abstract and concrete expressive forms allows thought to concentrate on essences and phenomena (ontology and phenomenology) that stimulate the emergence of potentialities that touch others. Holding a Master of Architecture and Urban Design from Cornell University (USA) and a Bachelor's of Architectural Design from Iowa State University (USA).
Studio design thoughts are grounded and emerge from research, writing, instruction, and design, seeking to ascertain essential qualities of a given place. His ‘system of forms’ explores thoughts, ideas, functional concepts, and material quality via a sensitive methodological approach focusing on cultural artifacts. Json is a designer thoroughly engaged to identify the ambiance each project aspires to become, thusly moving to generate inspired ambient forms that endure in minds while affecting places. He believes each project is a unique endeavor, beginning with the land (earth + water) upon which people form urban landscapes, architectures, and interiors. Designers respond to the textural nuances of the ground, locating the local culture at a particular moment in time. Beginning with the client's thoughts, we shall resolve the potential of the project at hand using design as the vehicle to exceed the initial objectives, expectations, and aspirations with every opportunity to design something meaningful for others.
